The Matriarchs behind the Patriarchs - A Lenten Bible Study series:
A six week study series beginning Tuesday, 2/23/2010 at Noon
Bob Wolfe (associate member) and Pastor Becky will present this study on the lives of women who lived, loved and struggled beside the men who shaped the nation of Israel. Find out what it was like to live in a Bedouin tribe and survive the daily demands and dangers of life! Discover how these women developed their own journey of faith and responded to God's call in their own way. As with everything at First Congregational - ALL are welcome!!
Bob (and wife Peggy) have spent years developing team teaching methods - regarding which they put on innumerable regional and national workshops. Since retirement, Bob has devoted his time to developing adult religious education courses and presenting them in a variety of venues. Bob's approch to bible study is primarily through the historical and literary approach - which often provides fresh insights into scripture.
Governance!!
Our congregation is addressing the issue of the governance structure of our church. Our current by-laws structure has some 'opportunities' as regards efficient and streamlined management of the church. It is important to point out that there is no internal contention at all regarding structure - we all know that we can make it better.
First Congregational is a member church of the United Church of Christ - which (very uniquely) holds that the real authority of the church (interntionally) resides at the level of the individual congregations - rather than at some national or international body.
In that spirit, we are planning a meeting of our congregation this coming April (2010) to consider alternative ways of organizing (governing? - doing the day-to-day work) our church. Obviously, all of our members will be strongly encouraged to participate.
In preparation for that, we are holding a series of educational meetings for our members - intended to educate our membership regarding the alternative types of structures we might want to consider. The first of these meetings was this past Sunday (2/14/2010) where we presented a description of our current structure. Attendance was excellent - as was input and thought provoking consideration. The plan is that three additional Sundays will offer descriptions of alternative structures we might want to consider - prior to the retreat where we will..
